Saipem Guyana operations supported by 80 percent local workforce – Managing Director

Since starting operations in Guyana in May 2018, Italian multinational oilfield services company Saipem has established a country office with 80 percent of its workforce now being Guyanese.

Saipem has been awarded contracts by ExxonMobil for the Engineering, Procuring, Construction and Installation of Subsea Umbilicals Risers Flowlines for the company’s offshore developments at the Stabroek Block.

In a presentation at the inauguralCaribbean Virtual Oil and Gas Summit held recently, Managing Director of Saipem Guyana Inc., Thuranthiran Nadarajah, told attendees Saipem operates in over 66 countries, employing more than 35,000 people across 120 nationalities. “we have distinctive operations where we have hubs of engineering and also yards operations and Guyana is our latest addition to this permanent presence.”

He stated, “Saipem Guyana’s organizational chart… 80% are local and 20% are expats currently operating in Guyana.” According to Nadarajah, the company started recruiting interns in September 2018.

“Saipem participated in various forums and events organized by our client ExxonMobil and their partners, and also the Center for [Local] Business Development, by the private sector and also by the government,” he said. “All this was…with the interest of developing local content and also infrastructure in Guyana.”

In order to meet its contractual requirements for the Liza project, the Managing Director said HSE trainings and initiatives were implemented and continue to be performed to develop local workforce safety awareness in Guyana.

“Saipem thrives…because of its people. We strongly believe in training. We strongly believe in showing our people a direction and a purpose and I’m glad to say that I have an exceptional team in Guyana, and we are moving forward,” he declared.
