Guyana was well represented at this year’s Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) by a delegation comprising companies, government agencies and business groups that left their mark at the Houston, Texas event where interest in the new oil producing country was at an all-time high.
The spotlight on Guyana was evident from day one at a well-attended session focusing on the rapid development of the giant offshore Liza resource – the first world-class discovery to be made by ExxonMobil off the country’s coast back in 2015. Attendees learnt about the Liza Development which has applied technology and novel execution approaches to discover, define, and rapidly develop the Liza field in a frontier oil and gas location. Speakers included officials from ExxonMobil and the Centre For Local Business Development, an organisation established in 2017 in Guyana to help build local capacity.

“Congratulations are extended to the Government of Guyana and GO-Invest for giving the Guyanese business community the opportunity to participate in one of the largest oil and gas conferences in the world,” Dr. Edris K. Dookie, Co-Founder and Director of Mid-Atlantic Oil and Gas Inc., a stakeholder in Guyana’s Canje Block, said in a comment to OilNOW.
Along with Dr. Dookie, the company was represented at OTC this year by Dr. Dennis Pieters – Director, and Fazal Hosein – Consultant Geologist.
“Guyana was well represented and the keynote speech by the Vice President [Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo] was well received across the board by those in attendance,” Dr. Dookie added, alluding to the input of Dr. Jagdeo at OTC’s inaugural Executive Dialogue Series focusing on Guyana’s emerging oil industry in the context of net zero emissions and his subsequent speech at an event sponsored by the Baker Institute Center for Energy Studies.

According to OTC, the Executive Dialogue Series is a new initiative aimed at engaging in a thoughtful discussion around corporate shifts, offshore resource development, emerging technologies, and the future of the offshore energy sector.
Meanwhile, Glenn Low-A-Chee, Managing Director of Guyana Logistics and Support Services Inc. (GLASS), another of the companies that formed part of the Guyana delegation, told OilNOW the response to the country’s presence at the event was overwhelming.

“Having such a high-level team representing Guyana led by the Vice President and the ministers really boosted the interest in the Guyana booth,” he said. “It was undoubtedly one of the busiest booths at this year’s OTC.
Low-A-Chee said he has been attending OTC for the past four conventions and this year is without a doubt the most successful for Guyana.
In addition to the Vice President, the Guyana delegation included Minister of Natural Resources (MNR), Vickram Bharrat, Senior Petroleum Coordinator at MNR, Bobby Gossai Jr., Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, Foreign Minister, Hugh Todd, and Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest), Dr. Peter Ramsaroop and his team. The Guyanese business groups included representatives from the Private Sector Commission, Guyana Oil and Gas Energy Chamber (GOGEC), Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), and representatives from several local businesses.
