Wael Sawan to become new Shell CEO as van Beurden steps down

Ben van Beurden is stepping down from his role as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Shell, at the end of the year.

Wael Sawan, Shell’s Integrated Gas, Renewables and Energy Solutions Director, has already been tapped to take up the mantle.

Wael’s appointment is effective January 1, 2023, when he will also join Shell’s Board of Directors. On the other hand, van Beurden will continue working as an adviser to the Board until June 30, 2023. At that point, he will conclude 39 years working with the group.

In a post on LinkedIn, van Beurden said, “It has been a privilege and an honour to have served the company for nearly four decades and to lead the business for the past nine years. In my journey from LNG design engineer to CEO, I have been fortunate to work alongside so many talented people from diverse backgrounds – all committed to our goal of providing the world with the essential commodities of modern life. I am very proud of what we have achieved together.”

He expressed “great confidence” in his successor, referring to him as a “principled and dynamic leader” who will work to deliver Shell’s #PoweringProgress strategy purposefully and profitably.

Shell said that Wael is based in The Hague and has been a member of Shell’s Executive Committee (EC) for three years. Before joining the EC, he was the Executive Vice President Deepwater and a member of the Upstream Leadership Team, and Executive Vice President Qatar and the Integrated Gas Leadership Team. He has worked in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas during his 25-year Shell career, and has also held roles in Downstream Retail, and various commercial and New Business Development projects.
