BP has extended its contract for utilisation of the mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) Stena IceMAX, Stena Drilling said Tuesday.

This extension shall see the MODU mobilise to the United States Gulf of Mexico in direct continuation of the initial one (1) well programme (estimated 90 days) offshore Newfoundland, for a further scope of two (2) years.

The initial contract was for a one (1) well programme off the coast of Newfoundland, lasting 80 days.

Stena IceMAX is the world’s only 6th Generation Ice-Class Harsh Environment dual-activity dynamically positioned (DP3) drillship, capable of drilling in water depths up to 10,000 feet, Stena said.

Stena is one of the world’s leading independent drilling contractors. Stena Drilling’s fleet of rigs are part of the ExxonMobil effort to explore, appraise, and develop wells offshore Guyana.
