The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) has bestowed Petrobras with the distinguished achievement award for companies, organizations, and institutions, recognizing the company’s advancements in the revitalization of the Marlim Field and the broader deepwater Campos basin.

OTC said the accolade underscores Petrobras’ pioneering efforts in deploying cutting-edge technologies to enhance the productivity of mature deepwater assets while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Campos basin, which saw its exploration beginnings in December 1974, serves as the backdrop for Petrobras’ contributions to the deepwater industry. Petrobras’ work in the Marlim field was previously acknowledged by OTC in 1992, highlighting the company’s technical achievements related to deepwater production systems. Now, after 31 years, Petrobras is once again celebrated by OTC for its commitment to redeveloping mature fields and introducing innovative subsea, drilling, reservoir, and decommissioning technologies.

OTC pointed out that a key highlight of Petrobras’ achievements was the deployment of two new floating production, storage and offloading units (FPSOs) within the Marlim field, both of which commenced production in 2023.

“Those developments have been instrumental in replacing nine decommissioning floating units, some of which trace back to the original development of Marlim in the 1990s, underscoring Petrobras’ dedication to modernizing offshore operations,” OTC said in a Jan. 25 announcement.

It also pointed to Petrobras’ innovative technologies and the reuse of existing subsea equipment which have contributed to the success in the Campos basin.

“Notably, their pioneering construction method, TOT-3P (True One Trip 3 Phases), has revolutionized well construction duration, reducing it by up to 50% and setting new efficiency benchmarks in the area,” OTC’s announcement continued. “Petrobras’ groundbreaking riser decommissioning pull-out procedure has also played a crucial role in facilitating safe and efficient decommissioning activities, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainable offshore practices.”
