With Guyana’s Berbice region set for major development, President Irfaan Ali is adamant that plans for the proposed deepwater port there must forge ahead.
“You have to build that deep-water port, that is part of the plan,” the Head of State said during a Sunday appearance on the Energy Perspectives podcast.
Last August, the Guyana government discussed plans for the development of a massive deepwater port in Berbice. The port is intended to improve trade, reduce shipping costs, and integrate with northern Brazil’s trade routes.
According to Ali, these investments will flood the region when the bridge linking Suriname and Guyana is constructed. A stadium is under construction and soon a mall will be built. There is also a plan for a transmission line for electricity sales from a potential second gas plant at the location.
“That will have a number of off-takers [investments], maybe a huge industrial zone,” he added. Ali also floated the idea of building a municipal airport in the region.
There is no definitive timeline yet for the port, which will be situated at the mouth of the Berbice River. The government has received proposals that are currently under review.
