PARAMARIBO, SURINAME – The GranMorgu development in Suriname’s Block 58 is “essentially double” the size of comparable offshore projects in the region, according to Gianluigi Della Rosa, Country Manager for Guyana and Suriname at Saipem.
Speaking at the Suriname Energy, Oil & Gas Summit (SEOGS) 2025, Della Rosa emphasized the unprecedented scale of the project and its implications for the country’s growing offshore sector.

“This is a huge project in terms of scale,” he said during the “A New Dawn – The GranMorgu Project” panel on Wednesday. “The scale of GranMorgu is essentially double compared to the average projects. A similar project in Guyana averages about 100 kilometers of pipeline. Here, it is 180 kilometers of pipeline.”
Saipem is responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of the subsea umbilicals, risers, flowlines and structures connecting the wells on the seafloor to the floating production storage and offloading unit (FPSO).
Della Rosa noted that the scope of work reflects the magnitude of the development, not only in terms of pipeline length but also the number of subsea components involved. “We are going to install more than 100 pieces of subsea structures. That gives an idea of the size and complexity of what GranMorgu represents,” he added.
To deliver this extensive infrastructure, Saipem will deploy multiple vessels from its fleet, including the Castorone, one of the largest pipelaying ships in the world. “Altogether, we’ll have nearly 600 people offshore on these vessels.” Della Rosa stated.
The GranMorgu Project is operated by TotalEnergies in partnership with APA Corporation and Staatsolie. Saipem joins TechnipFMC, SBM Offshore, Technip Energies and Noble Corporation among the group of major contractors involved in this next phase of Suriname’s offshore energy development.
As Suriname looks to establish itself as a key player in the regional oil and gas sector, the scale of GranMorgu positions it as a landmark project, marking a “new dawn” not only in production but in ambition.
