French energy major TotalEnergies is expanding the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) across its workforce to improve operational performance, accelerate innovation, and strengthen decision-making across its business. The company outlined its strategy in its Energy Talks publication released on July 1.

TotalEnergies said AI has been part of its operations for decades, particularly in geoscience and subsurface analysis, where large volumes of data and numerical simulations have supported oil and gas exploration since the 1990s. Today, the technology is being deployed across the company’s energy production and distribution activities.

“Artificial intelligence is no longer a niche topic reserved for a few experts. It is now emerging as a cross-functional tool, with the potential to impact all employees… Anticipating this shift, TotalEnergies chose early on to deploy generative AI tools at scale across its workforce, making it a lever for both performance and creativity,” TotalEnergies said.

Supporting this strategy is Pangea, TotalEnergies’ high-performance supercomputer. The system is used for numerical simulation in oil and gas operations, renewable energy modeling, deep learning applications, and hybrid AI models that combine artificial intelligence with physical simulations.

Rather than focusing on isolated applications, TotalEnergies said AI delivers the greatest value when combined with reliable data and human expertise.

“This evolution is driven by a dual dynamic: on one hand, highly specialized solutions continue to evolve to meet the needs of technical and engineering roles. On the other, AI is becoming more widely accessible through user-friendly tools, enabling employees to identify new use cases and transform their day-to-day work,” the company said.

It added that what began as a technical project has evolved into a company-wide transformation initiative.

TotalEnergies’ operations span oil, natural gas, liquefied natural gas, and renewables. In the Guyana-Suriname Basin, the company is advancing the GranMorgu development offshore Suriname, the country’s first offshore oil project, which is designed to produce 220,000 barrels of oil per day from Block 58.
