TotalEnergies is preparing for a second wave of exploration offshore Suriname, with a multi-well campaign expected to start next year, Daniel Larranaga, VP, Exploration Americas, TotalEnergies, said on day two of Suriname’s flagship energy conference in Paramaribo.

Larranaga said Suriname remains central to the company’s exploration plans because the country offers strong geology, workable fiscal terms, stable authorities, and reliable partners.

“As I said before, we need good rocks. We have them. We need good fiscals, or let’s say fiscals that work for both sides of the table. We have those. And we need good partners,” he added.

TotalEnergies operates four blocks in Suriname, with Block 58 being its key acreage. The company and its partners have made five discoveries in the block, supporting the final investment decision for the GranMorgu development.

He noted that TotalEnergies has also carried out extensive seismic work offshore Suriname, including the use of ocean bottom node technology to improve subsurface imaging and define new targets.

“Looking forward, we’re now entering a second wave of exploration activity for TotalEnergies and partners in Suriname,” Larranaga shared. “We’re going to start a multi-well campaign, hopefully next year, depending on rig availability.”

The company also plans additional seismic surveys to extend its exploration targets offshore Suriname. Larranaga said first oil from GranMorgu is expected in just under two years. He described the project as important for both Suriname and TotalEnergies.

He added that TotalEnergies sees Suriname as a long-term investment province.

“We believe in Suriname. We’re here for the long term. We were here 60 years ago. I think we will be here 60 years from now,” Larranaga said.
