The skills and competence required to land a job or even to provide services in Guyana have drastically changed. While many adults are adjusting to Guyana’s new employment market, young people have a unique opportunity to become not only employable but also entrepreneurially aware.

What I like is that the oil and gas companies themselves are creating interest in areas such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). I was happy to read about ExxonMobil investing in 200 girls from various parts of the country via a Gear Engineering workshop.

More investments like this are needed in our youth. It must be targeted and meaningful. Companies, especially those operating in the oil and gas sector, have the resources to pursue these programmes, and should do so en masse.

If we want a country that is managed efficiently, then we must prepare young people by giving them the requisite tools. As I commend the efforts by ExxonMobil, I am calling on more such investments by more oil and gas companies, to give young people a head start in career choices and life.
