Construction moves apace on Guyana’s Gas-to-Energy project

The Gas-to-Energy project at Wales is moving ahead with visible progress. From foundations now in place to new companies showing interest and plans for an industrial zone taking shape, several key steps are unfolding at the same time.

Here are the latest updates as provided by Guyanese President Irfaan Ali on Sept. 8: 

  • Phase I, which includes the 300 MW combined cycle plant and NGL facilities being executed by Lindsayca Guyana Inc., saw the first gas turbine foundation poured on Tuesday night, September 9.

  • More than 300 people are currently employed on Phase I, with an additional 100 staff set to be engaged within the next 30 days.
  • The concrete pouring of the remaining turbine foundations is scheduled to be completed within the next month.
  • Phase II, which envisions another 300 MW power plant and NGL facility, has attracted seven submissions now under review.

  • Pre-qualified firms for Phase II are being finalized ahead of engineering, procurement, and construction and financing arrangements.
  • At the Wales Industrial Zone, an updated map has been prepared outlining existing and proposed energy infrastructure.
  • Designated land has been allocated in the zone for a data center, an ammonia/urea plant, and a glass factory.
  • Plans are advancing to allocate 20 million cubic feet per day of gas for a fertilizer plant capable of producing 300 tons per year of urea.
  • Discussions are underway with international and local firms that have expressed interest in the fertiliser initiative.
