Dear Editor,

As a law student in Guyana, I was very encouraged by President Ali’s announcement that work will soon begin on a national law school. For many of us, the dream of becoming a lawyer has often been blocked by the high cost of studying abroad, visa issues, and the stress of leaving our families behind. Having a law school here at home will finally give us the chance to finish our studies in a system that reflects our own culture, values, and priorities.

Every day, we hear about how much oil is being produced and how much money is coming in. But the real test of this wealth is how it improves the lives of ordinary Guyanese. Turning oil into opportunity means investing in our people. A law school is proof that resources can be used to build not just roads and buildings, but human potential.

Legal education is not just about producing lawyers. It is about giving our country the skills and knowledge to protect justice and strengthen democracy. A local law school will also prepare us to navigate the legal challenges that will shape Guyana’s future, from managing natural resources like oil and gas to supporting social and economic development.

Of course, access must come with quality. The school must meet high standards so that Guyanese-trained lawyers can compete with confidence across the Caribbean. If done right, this law school will stand as one of the most important legacies of this administration. Oil may fuel our economy, but education will secure our future.

For students like me, this decision is not just another policy. It is hope made real.

Sincerely,

Jason Khan
