I recently read that President Ali made the grand announcement that major investments are underway to modernise GPL and build a smarter power grid. This is another change which I’m sure will be welcomed by the Guyanese people. Our country has needed these changes for a more reliable electricity system.

However, whilst we await these changes to be finally implemented, many of us are still experiencing constant blackouts, which just adds to our daily frustration. Due to this, several families struggle to keep their produce fresh, students are hindered in their ability to study effectively, and small businesses face severe losses, depending on their industry. For a country that has been growing as fast as we have, this is unacceptable.

These promised projects — new substations, improved transmission lines, and the gas-to-energy project — sound great on paper, and even better to the ear. However, what the public really needs now are clear timelines, regular updates, and quick action so that these promises aren’t simply empty ones.

It is also important that these changes are fully implemented in all regions, and not just Georgetown. Reliable electricity should be a benefit for each household in every community, regardless of their location.

Guyana has the means to finally solve this long-standing problem, so let’s make 2026 the year where blackouts are more the exception, and not the norm.

Yours Truly,

Jean Adams
