Heavy rainfall continues to affect regions across Guyana with severe flooding in several communities. Relief efforts have been ongoing in the areas affected and this is expected to continue in the coming days.
Mid Atlantic Oil & Gas Inc. donated GY$10M to the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) on Sunday to support flood relief efforts across the new oil producing country. The company has a 12.5% stake in the offshore Canje Block.
Corporate Secretary, Glenn Low-A-Chee handed over the cheque to CDC Director General, Lieutenant Colonel, Kester Craig at the Commission’s Headquarters.
“We fully support the efforts of the Civil Defence Commission to bring relief to those affected by flooding. Mid-Atlantic Oil & Gas remains committed to working with the CDC in these challenging times,” Low-A-Chee told OilNOW.
The CDC Director General said all 10 administrative regions in the country are experiencing flooding as a result of the ongoing heavy rainfall.
“Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs) have activated the Regional Disaster Risk Management System (RDRMS) to ensure timely assessment and response in communities affected,” Craig said.
The CDC has deployed teams over the past 12 days to conduct rapid assessments and verifications of flood reports across the country. These were done in collaboration with agencies including the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs), Neighborhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and Community Development Councils (CDCs).
In an effort to ensure that affected residents receive adequate food, clothing and shelter, thousands of food and cleaning hampers have been distributed in Regions 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10.
The Commission said it will continue its distribution of food and non-food items to affected residents as the need arises.
The National Weather Watch Center has advised that Coastal Regions will likely experience cloudy to overcast skies with scattered showers of varying intensities and frequent rain Monday through Thursday. Thundershowers are also likely to be experienced over these areas. Rainfall is expected to range between 1 inch and 3 inches within a 24 hours’ period. Southern Guyana and Inland areas will likely experience similar conditions from the afternoon into the evening hours with rainfall likely to range between 1 inch to 4 inches within a 24 hours’ period.
