France-based marine seismic data company CGG has agreed with the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries of Trinidad and Tobago to reimage vintage 3D seismic data from four deepwater offshore blocks.

The project, covering blocks 25a, 25b, 26, and 27 offshore Trinidad, focuses on the complex eastern Columbus basin in the country’s deep waters. CGG plans to reimagine over 5500 square kilometers (km2) of 3D seismic data using its proprietary TL-FWI imaging technology.

The initiative aims to deliver improved seismic images, providing a better understanding of the geological systems in this underexplored part of the basin.

Trinidad needs to pour investments into deepwater exploration to reverse decline, says GlobalData | OilNOW

CGG has received firm industry commitments for the project, with early products expected in late February 2024. The agreement also includes generating well and geological products, delivered through CGG’s platform GeoWells.

The Executive Vice President of Earth Data at CGG, Dechun Lin, expressed satisfaction with the multi-client agreement, stating, “We will use our established leadership in geoscience solutions and cutting-edge imaging technology to support this Caribbean Island nation’s ability to effectively address its energy needs and goals.”

Trinidad’s Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Stuart Young, announced that the country is expected to launch a deepwater bid round this year to shore up its gas resources. TT’s last deepwater bid round received little interest; bids were submitted for only four of the 17 blocks up for grabs. The auction was opened on December 3, 2021, and ran for six months. The blocks – 25B, 25A, 23B and 27 – were bid on by a consortium of bp and BG/Shell.
