The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season is back and ExxonMobil is once again throwing its full support behind the Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) in their bid for the coveted title and trophy.
Exxon is expected to launch its sponsorship on September 12 at the Marriot Hotel, ahead of the Guyana games. The Warriors team will be present and is expected to engage with enthusiastic fans. This will be Exxon’s seventh consecutive year sponsoring the Warriors.
South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir has been appointed captain for the Warriors this time around, replacing Shimron Heymyer who led the team last year. All-rounder Romario Shepherd is the Vice-captain.
CPL kicked off on August 16 but heads to Guyana this with the Warriors facing Jamaica Tallawahs on September 13, Saint Lucia Kings on September 14, Trinbago Knight Riders on September 16, and Barbados Royals on September 17.
As of September 8, the Guyana team is at the very top of the roster, having won four of five games. The fifth game was rained out.
Its longstanding rival on and off the field, Trinidad and Tobago, is in second place with an equal number of victories, but two losses. Trinidad has won the title four times. Guyana has a reputation for performing well up to the finals, where it delivers disappointing results. Guyana has never won CPL.
The playoffs will begin with the first Eliminator on September 19 followed by the Qualifier One on September 20 and Qualifier Two on September 22. The final is set for September 24.
ExxonMobil is the operator of the Stabroek Block, alongside Hess and CNOOC.
