Brazil’s pre-salt Búzios field in the Santos Basin has reached a record average production of 1.1 million barrels of oil per day (b/d). Petrobras announced on June 24 that this surpasses the previous milestone of 1 million b/d set in October 2025.

“This record marks an important phase of production acceleration at Búzios, which will continue to grow. We are continuing to connect new wells and increase production on the P-78 and P-79 platforms,” Petrobras President Magda Chambriard said.

Búzios is the largest oil field in Brazil in terms of both production and reserves. It accounts for about one-third of all oil output operated by Petrobras, including partner volumes.

The field currently produces through eight units, including P-74, P-75, P-76, P-77, P-78, P-79, and the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels Almirante Barroso and Almirante Tamandaré. The latter is Brazil’s largest production unit with capacity of 270,000 barrels per day.

The field’s newest platforms, P-78 and P-79, are still ramping up toward peak capacity of 180,000 barrels per day each. Petrobras said additional growth is expected as new wells are tied in.

“We have been able to accelerate production at Búzios and contribute to achievements such as this record through management strategies, engineering solutions and innovative technologies that allow us to bring units out of shipyards earlier and deploy them to the field sooner, which has also been prepared in advance to receive them,” Petrobras Director of Engineering, Technology and Innovation Renata Baruzzi said.

Búzios lies more than 2,000 metres below the seabed and is the second Petrobras-operated field to surpass 1 million b/d, following Tupi in the Santos Basin pre-salt region.
