Exxon survey at Guyana’s main ship channel covered by EIA

ExxonMobil Guyana has commenced geotechnical and geophysical surveying operations in the vicinity of the Demerara  main ship channel and off the West Coast of Demerara in the vicinity of Plantation Best.

ExxonMobil Guyana’s Media Advisor, Kwesi Isles explained, “The surveys, being conducted by EEPGL’s contractor, Van Oord as part of the Gas-to-Energy project, are covered by the approved Environmental Impact Assessment and the Environmental Authorisation EEPGL received via the EPA permit which was issued on Nov. 25, 2022. The permit is publicly available on the EPA website.”

According to a notice by Guyana’s Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), the surveying activities began on Feb. 24. and are set to conclude on Nov. 1.

Four vessels are currently being utilised – Unmanned Survey Vessel Deep Lorean, Utility Vessel Wise Fox, Utility Vessel Risen Star and the Workboat Adel.

According to Exxon, the works are being undertaken by its contractor Van Oord.

The survey area is situated approximately 01.05 nautical miles (1.96 kilometers) off the Coast of Guyana and covers an area of 70.08 square nautical miles (240.40 square kilometers).

Construction has already commenced for the project to see it delivered and commissioned in the final quarter of 2024.

Stabroek Block operator ExxonMobil is expected to deliver the completed pipeline to the power plant by the fourth quarter of 2024, to achieve commissioning and testing of the power plant.

The Project is expected to deliver power at less than half of the current costs.
