Dear Editor,
When I was small, I used to watch the boats glide along the Essequibo, listening to elders speak of a future that seemed far away, a future where Guyana could stand on its own feet. Oil was just a story then, something in the newspapers, something other people talked about in other countries. Now, FPSOs are out there, barrels are flowing, and Guyana is on the world stage.
We are seeing change in every corner, roads stretching farther, schools opening doors, young people dreaming bigger. But with all the talk of progress, I’m sure you can’t help but wonder, are we making sure our own people are part of this story?
And yes, for people like me, the chances are real. Training programmes and technical colleges are opening up, and for the first time, it feels like we actually have a shot at joining the industry, learning the skills we need, and one day running projects or managing operations.
If we focus on giving young people the tools and opportunities, 2026 could be the year we see a generation from every corner of Guyana – Essequibo, Berbice, Rupununi, stepping into these jobs, showing that local talent can do the work just as well as anyone else.
It’s exciting to think that we don’t have to just watch from the riverbank anymore. We can be part of building our own future.
Sincerely,
A Guyanese Who Believes
