Dear Editor,
There has been a lot of discussion recently about Guyana’s oil production reaching the point where, on paper, every citizen now accounts for about one barrel of oil per day. This milestone is more than just an impressive statistic it signals the continued growth of our oil sector, and with that, increased revenues for national development.
As an ordinary Guyanese, I am hopeful that this expanded production will translate into even greater benefits for people across the country. I hope to see more new roads and improved infrastructure that make travel easier for all of us. I look forward to continued upgrades to our hospitals, and the construction of more medical facilities, especially in far-flung communities where access to healthcare remains a challenge.
And as a mother with a young daughter, I am particularly encouraged by the potential for deeper investments in education. More modern schools, better learning environments, and upgraded facilities would help prepare our children for a brighter and more competitive future.
So, while I know I won’t be receiving an actual barrel of oil, I am hopeful that the increased revenues from our growing production will continue to deliver real, everyday improvements, better roads, stronger healthcare, stronger education, and wider economic opportunities. If each “barrel per person” contributes to a better quality of life for all Guyanese, then we are truly moving in the right direction.
Sincerely,
Leah October
