Petrobras has identified hydrocarbons in the pre-salt section of Brazil’s Campos Basin, following exploratory drilling in block C-M-477 offshore Rio de Janeiro, it said in an April 13 release.
According to Petrobras, the fluid samples have been collected and will now undergo laboratory testing to assess reservoir conditions and fluid properties.
“The hydrocarbon carrier interval was verified through electrical profiles, gas indications, and fluid sampling. The samples will later be sent for laboratory analysis, which will allow the characterization of the conditions of the reservoirs and fluids found, enabling the continuity of the evaluation of the potential of the area,” Petrobras said.
The discovery was made in well 1-BRSA-1404DC-RJS, located 201 kilometers off the coast at a water depth of 2,984 meters.

Petrobras said the drilling process was completed safely and in line with environmental and operational requirements.
The company said operations in the block are part of its strategy to replenish reserves through exploratory frontier areas in partnership with other companies, supporting future energy supply needs.
The Campos basin, one of Brazil’s most established producing regions, has seen renewed exploration focus as operators target deeper pre-salt intervals beneath legacy fields. The Marlim Sul area continues to offer upside potential through advanced drilling and reservoir evaluation techniques.
