Italian oilfield services company Saipem will officially open its offshore construction facility this month in Guyana’s capital Georgetown, to support the growing offshore operations in the new oil producing South American country.

The facility will feature a heavy load bearing jetty, the largest heavy lift crane in Guyana and specialized welding and testing equipment. All construction work for the new facility was awarded to local Guyanese contractors.

“The opening of this Facility represents a key milestone in Saipem Local Content development plan and a great step forward in our relationship with the dynamic Nation of Guyana,” said Giorgio Martelli, President and CEO of Saipem America.

Offshore Area Procurement Manager, Gianluigi Della Rosa, said earlier this year Saipem will be engaging several Guyanese companies to equip the fabrication yard and provide other services. “We have to equip this yard with all necessary tools. Equipment: some will be coming from other Saipem yards, but many will be purchased, a lot of tools will be purchased locally, if possible. Of course, a series of service will be necessary for the ordinary and daily activities carried out at this yard,” he told local companies during the Guyana Supplier Forum held in February.

The company said landmark activities such as the establishment of the construction facility in Guyana, emphasized by leading-edge technologies and local content, will help set the industry standard for sustainable performance in frontier oil and gas regions.

Since starting operations in Guyana in May 2018, the oilfield services company has established a country office with over 80 percent of its workforce now being Guyanese.

Saipem has been awarded subsea contracts by ExxonMobil Guyana for the first two phases of the Liza development as well as the Payara development in the Stabroek Block.
