Saipem is set to take over the latest generation heavy lift pipelay vessel, JSD6000, in June. The company said the vessel, built by Chinese state-owned port and naval machinery manufacturer ZPMC, had its completion ceremony at ZPMC’s Changxing base.
The 216-meter-long JSD6000, designed by Ulstein, boasts a DP3 dynamic positioning system and a heavy-lift capacity of up to 5,200 tonnes. It can lay pipelines up to 36″ in diameter in J-Lay mode and up to 60″ in S-Lay mode at water depths up to 3,000 meters.

Saipem said it signed a contract for the bareboat charter of the vessel for five years, with two one-year extension options. The company noted that this charter aligns with its capital-light strategy and enhances its capabilities while adhering to high safety and environmental standards.
The vessel’s history includes an initial order by Petrofac in January 2014, later terminated in October 2015. ZPMC acquired the project in April 2018 and launched the vessel in December 2020. After completing sea trials and equipment testing in May 2023, the JSD6000 returned to ZPMC’s Changxing base for final preparations.
