Stena Drilling has secured a contract to drill what is set to be Greece’s first deepwater offshore well.
The company said on April 15 that Energean Hellas Ltd awarded a contract for the mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) Stena DrillMAX to carry out an exploratory drilling campaign offshore Greece.
The campaign is scheduled to begin in early 2027 and will target one firm well in Block 2, located in the northwestern Ionian Sea. The operation will use managed pressure drilling (MPD), a technique applied to control wellbore pressure in challenging formations.

Stena Drilling said the project will deliver the first deepwater offshore well in Greece, expanding drilling activity into deeper waters beyond the country’s existing exploration footprint.
“This will be the first ever deepwater offshore well drilled in Greece, and Stena Drilling is proud to have been selected to deliver this project together with Energean,” the company stated.
The contract builds on an existing relationship between the two companies. Stena Drilling noted that it has previously worked with Energean on multiple campaigns in Israel and Morocco.

“Stena Drilling and Energean have a long-standing and successful working partnership which includes previous operations in Israel and Morocco across multiple campaigns,” the company said.
The company added that this experience supports its ability to execute the upcoming campaign.
“This proven track record underpins Stena Drilling’s ability to support Energean’s activities, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with Energean to complete a safe, efficient and successful operation,” Stena Drilling said.
Stena Drilling currently operates two rigs offshore Guyana, including DrillMAX alongside Noble Drilling’s fleet, supporting ExxonMobil’s exploration, appraisal and development drilling activities.
