TotalEnergies and Eni have taken the final investment decision (FID) for the development of the Cronos gas field offshore Cyprus, with first production targeted for 2028.
The partners each hold a 50% interest in Cyprus offshore Block 6. The Cronos discovery was made in 2022, and appraisal activities were completed in 2024.
Located approximately 185 kilometers southwest of Cyprus, the deepwater project will include four subsea wells. Gas from the field will be transported through a subsea pipeline to Egypt, where it will be processed and liquefied at the Damietta liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal before export to international markets, including Europe.
According to TotalEnergies, Cronos is expected to reach plateau production of approximately 500 million cubic feet of gas per day, equivalent to about 2.8 million tonnes of LNG per year. TotalEnergies will market 50% of the LNG volumes from the project.
“As Cyprus’ first gas development project, Cronos will support the development of a new regional gas hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, leveraging Egypt’s infrastructure. This new gas route in the Mediterranean will contribute to Europe’s energy security by diversifying its LNG supply sources,” said Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies.
The development will use existing infrastructure in Egypt, including facilities linked to the Zohr field. The partners said this approach will support project delivery and reduce the carbon intensity of production.
“By relying on existing gas processing capacities, this project is aligned with our strategy of prioritizing low-cost and low-emission projects. Cronos will also contribute to the growth of TotalEnergies’ LNG portfolio, which is expected to reach 60 Mtpa [metric tonnes per annum] by 2030,” Pouyanné said.
The FID follows a host government agreement signed in February 2025. TotalEnergies and Eni have also completed commercial agreements covering offshore facility access, gas transportation through Egypt, LNG processing at Damietta and LNG sales arrangements.
TotalEnergies is also present in Cyprus in offshore Blocks 11 (50%, operator), 7 (50%, operator) and 8 (40%).
