The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has certified the results of the 2025 General and Regional Elections, confirming a decisive victory for the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), clearing the way for President Irfaan Ali to be sworn in for a second term today.
The declaration was made on Saturday, September 6, after 11 p.m. Elections were held on September 1.
GECOM stated that the PPP/C, which secured over 242,000 votes, will occupy 36 seats in the National Assembly, three more than it did in the previous term. This majority cements the party’s return to government with an expanded mandate.
Ali thanked his supporters in a post-declaration video message on his official Facebook page. “You walked this journey with me. You worked tirelessly with the party. You sacrificed time and energy. You placed your trust in my candidacy and in our party’s vision,” the President-elect said.
This victory matches that of 2006, when Bharrat Jagdeo, the incumbent at the time, secured his second election win with 36 parliamentary seats for the PPP/C.
The newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, led by businessman Azruddin Mohamed, captured just over 109,000 votes to claim 16 seats. A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) followed in third place with nearly 78,000 votes, earning 12 seats. The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) secured more than 4,200 votes and one seat. The Alliance for Change (AFC) and the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) got the two lowest vote totals and will not be heading to Parliament.
Mohamed’s WIN Party, as the second-largest bloc, is set to assume the role of the main opposition and will select the next Leader of the Opposition.
Following the unseating of his party as the main opposition, APNU’s leader and presidential candidate pledged in a release Saturday that his party would “re-emerge better and stronger”.
The swearing-in of President Ali is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at State House, the official residence of the President in Georgetown. Following the ceremony, a grand procession is expected to proceed along Main Street, culminating in national celebrations at the Kingston Seawall Esplanade.
