Gas will be taking center stage at this year’s Suriname Energy Oil and Gas Summit (SEOGS) set for June 17 – 20. According to the SEOGS website, a pre-summit gas masterclass and technical sessions will focus on gas supply, demand, pricing, and its role in the energy transition.

The executive summit explores gas options for emerging supply provinces. Discussions will highlight global momentum and consensus behind gas and LNG as reliable, lower-emission energy solutions. Companies including Petronas, Honeywell, Fulcrum LNG, and the National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago Ltd are set to discuss FLNG and other tailored development strategies.

For Suriname, Wood Mackenzie estimates that the discovered oil resource count is more than 2.4 billion barrels and its natural gas resources are 12.5 trillion cubic feet. Suriname’s discovered natural gas endowment accounts for 48% of its discovered resources. Major gas finds have been made in Blocks 58 and 52. Suriname’s first offshore development, GranMorgu, is expected to start producing oil in 2028.

Last year, the government signed a letter of agreement with Block 52 operators ExxonMobil and Petronas to advance gas development. The agreement outlines a framework for negotiations. Rystad Energy said a 10-year tax break for the partners could be key to making gas production feasible, with first output possible by 2031. Petronas is weighing a floating LNG project. Wood Mackenzie analyst Luiz Hayum says Block 52’s gas volumes, estimated at two trillion cubic feet, could support such a development.

Gas is also a growing priority in neighboring Guyana. Fulcrum LNG has been hired by the government to work with ExxonMobil on non-associated gas resource development in the Stabroek Block.

Guyana is pursuing a Gas-to-Energy project to deliver affordable and stable electricity to its citizens. A broader gas market build-out is under consideration.

The country has confirmed 17 trillion cubic feet of gas in the Stabroek Block. Key discoveries anchoring this resource include Longtail and Haimara. Longtail has already been selected as the 8th development after Hammerhead.

ExxonMobil recently completed appraisal work to help finalize a gas utilization plan. “We see potential for an Alumina Plant, Data Centres, and a Fertilizer Plant,” the company stated.
