The Government of Guyana is preparing to make critical decisions on the country’s second Gas-to-Energy project before the end of the first quarter of 2026, with hopes of partnering with Suriname on the integrated development.

This was announced by Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, on February 14 during remarks at the opening of the Guyana Technical Training College Inc. campus. He explained that the government is pursuing a regional partnership on the initiative, but is prepared to proceed independently if necessary.

The second gas project is slated to be located in Berbice, Region Six.

“In the coming days, you will hear us talking about Phase 2 gas. And we have to get that done before 2030…we are hoping that Suriname will be here to have some serious discussions on whether we have an integrated project with Suriname. If we don’t get a decision very quickly, we will have to commence our own project,” he said.

According to Ali, the country’s second gas project will expand infrastructure to support gas development, with integration tied to strengthening energy security. “Phase 2 gas also will have an exclusive economic zone for ports…we want this project to be integrated for regional security. Very, very important,” he said.

In September 2025, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, President of the Republic of Suriname, and President Ali advanced discussions on bilateral cooperation, with a focus on energy security.

The Presidents had acknowledged the strategic importance of energy security to national and regional development. They agreed to strengthen cooperation in the oil and gas sector, as well as in renewable energy and electricity interconnection.

The two sides also committed to exploring joint ventures, knowledge-sharing mechanisms, and investment opportunities that would advance their respective national energy agendas while contributing to regional energy resilience.
