Guyana’s elections moved into the counting phase following close of polls at 6 pm on Monday, with 845 of the Statements of Polls already submitted to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) as of 9 am September 2. This figure represents approximately 80% of the SOPs, according to the GECOM website.

Throughout Tuesday, GECOM officials will continue to process the ballots, as the nation awaits the first official results.

General Secretary of the ruling People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Bharrat Jagdeo, commenting on the picture so far for the governing party, told reporters last evening, “We have a macro picture, and as far as I see, it’s a good picture.” Jagdeo’s remarks reflected optimism even as the final outcome remains uncertain.

Observers noted instances of low voter turnout in parts of the country, but GECOM officials maintained that the official count will determine the true participation rate.

GECOM Public Relations Officer Yolanda Ward said last evening during a post poll press briefing that the Commission is committed to releasing results “in the shortest possible time”.

Ward stressed that GECOM’s priority is ensuring a process that is both transparent and credible, with party agents and observers closely monitoring the count. By and large, voting went off without a hitch, according to GECOM’s view.

“For us, the voting process has proceeded smoothly and peacefully across the country. Where issues have arisen, they have been addressed promptly and transparently, in accordance with the law,” Ward assured during the press briefing.

As ballots are tallied, the stakes for this election remain high. Guyana is now one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, fueled by offshore oil production that has transformed its global standing. The next Government will face the challenge of managing resource wealth while addressing calls for transparency, equity, and sustainable development.

Party leaders have expressed confidence that the vote was conducted peacefully.

For many Guyanese, the results will decide not just who governs, but also how the country’s oil wealth will shape their future.

A total of 757,690 registered voters across Guyana’s 10 administrative regions were eligible to cast their ballots at 2,790 polling stations.

Six parties contested the elections: the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), the Alliance For Change (AFC), the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM), and the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP).
