Recent reports that local fabrication has secured a place in Guyana’s oil and gas supply chain should be viewed as more than an achievement for the petroleum sector. It is an opportunity to build industrial capabilities that can benefit the country long after individual oil projects are completed.
Guyanese companies and workers are gaining experience in welding, engineering, inspection, project management, and quality assurance. These skills can support construction, marine services, manufacturing, agriculture, renewable energy, and infrastructure development. With the right experience and certification, local firms may also become capable of competing for work across the Caribbean.
However, local content does not mean that businesses should automatically receive contracts. Companies must demonstrate that they can meet the required safety and quality standards, deliver on time, and operate consistently. In industries where poor workmanship can have serious consequences, standards cannot be relaxed.
The better approach is to help more Guyanese firms reach those standards. This requires technical training, certification, access to equipment, and opportunities to work alongside experienced companies. Businesses also need timely information about upcoming requirements so they can decide whether investments in staff and machinery are sensible.
Local companies must also think beyond supplying one operator. They should use the experience gained in oil and gas to enter other sectors and regional markets, rather than becoming dependent on a single industry.
Success should therefore be measured by more than the value of contracts awarded today. We should also consider how many workers are developing advanced skills; how many companies are becoming internationally competitive and whether the experience gained is strengthening Guyana’s wider economy.
The oil and gas sector has created an opening for local fabrication. The goal must be to turn that opening into a permanent and competitive Guyanese industry.
