The Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI) is rapidly expanding its capabilities to better serve the growing needs of the South American nation’s budding petroleum sector.

Back in April, GYSBI—which is the main facility servicing the country’s deepwater operations—commenced construction of two additional berths at the value of US$16 million to allow for heavy lifting services to be executed at the facility.

In an update, the company disclosed to OilNOW that construction is now at 60% with the company eyeing its full completion by the second quarter of 2022.

Initially, the project was slated to be completed by October 2021 but due to global supply chain issues, it has been delayed.

With the construction of the additional berths, GYSBI’s shore base capabilities will be significantly boosted and will see works that were previously sent to Trinidad and Tobago being diverted to Guyana.

Moreover, with the additional berths, GYSBI which is the main service provider for ExxonMobil’s offshore operations can extend its capacity to cater to four supply vessels simultaneously.

To add to this capacity, GYSBI had also commissioned a brand-new Manitowoc crane in July, further enhancing the country’s waterfront heavy lifting capabilities.

GYSBI’s General Manager, Sean Hill had explained that the 350MT machine, with a 315 ft (96 m) boom will eliminate a critical barrier to enabling Guyana to be totally self-sufficient to develop its subsea natural resources, by enabling lifts approximately 3 times heavier than previously possible. And this is also supported by another 180-tonne crawler crane that was commissioned in May.
