ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions recently announced a carbon capture and storage agreement with Nucor Corporation, one of North America’s largest steel producers. Under this new agreement, ExxonMobil will undertake the capture, transport, and storage of up to 800,000 metric tons per year of carbon dioxide (CO2) from Nucor’s manufacturing site in Convent, Louisiana. The Convent site specialises in the production of direct reduced iron (DRI), a raw material used in the manufacture of high-quality steel products, such as automobiles, appliances, and heavy equipment.

This milestone agreement marks the third carbon capture initiative announced by ExxonMobil in the past seven months. The company has previously entered into agreements with Linde, an industrial gas company, and CF Industries, a producer of agricultural fertilisers. With the inclusion of the Nucor project, ExxonMobil has committed to the transportation and storage of a staggering 5 million metric tons per year (MTA) of CO2 for third-party customers. It said this amount is equivalent to replacing approximately 2 million gasoline-powered cars with electric vehicles—a figure that roughly aligns with the current total number of electric vehicles (EVs) on US roads today.
Dan Ammann, President of ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, said “Our agreement with Nucor is the latest example of how we’re delivering on our mission to help accelerate the world’s path to net-zero and build a compelling new business. Momentum is building as customers recognize our ability to solve emission challenges at scale.”

Anticipated to commence operations in 2026, the Nucor project will integrate with the existing CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure used by ExxonMobil’s CF Industries initiative. Exxon said this collaboration aligns with Louisiana’s objective of achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
In a recent Low Carbon Solutions Spotlight event, ExxonMobil outlined its strategic focus on developing and deploying emission reduction solutions for energy-intensive sectors, including industries like steel. The company said it is pursuing ongoing research, innovation, and collaboration with various stakeholders, to explore diverse avenues to achieve a sustainable energy future.
