The Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) is preparing to train another batch of electrical and mechanical technicians in electric and hybrid vehicle maintenance as Guyana’s electric vehicle market expands.
A notice seen by OilNOW in the Guyana Chronicle on August 26 invites practicing auto-electricians and mechanical technicians to apply for the free Electromobility Training program.
The program will cover Level 3 and Level 4 training, combining classroom instruction with practical workshop exercises. Training will focus on “electric and hybrid vehicle systems, electrical safety, safe isolation procedures, drivetrain architecture and high-voltage battery removal and refit.”
Participants will also receive training in diagnostics and vehicle recovery procedures.

The Level 3 program is scheduled for September 14-18, followed by Level 4 training from September 21-25. Both programs will be held at the Mahaicony Technical and Vocational Training Centre in Park Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
Successful participants who complete the training and final assessments will receive an internationally recognized certificate from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).
Applications are due on August 31, with limited spaces available and priority given to submissions received first.
According to the agency, the training forms part of its efforts to build technical capacity for Guyana’s growing electric vehicle sector.
In July, GEA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mahender Sharma disclosed that more than 870 electric vehicles had been imported into Guyana, while efforts were underway to expand charging infrastructure.
Alongside infrastructure, the GEA is developing local technical capacity, with more than 77 mechanics and electricians trained to service and repair electric vehicles.
“We worked with the Board of Industrial Training, and we had support from the UNDP [United Nations Development Programme] in that regard…Our new set of charging stations will now be paired with grid-connected solar,” Sharma said at the time.
