Dear Editor,

I must admit, I always thought it was a lie. But as a mother of a daughter at West Demerara Secondary School, I’ve seen how Guyana’s growing oil industry can benefit everyday families. Thanks to Project FLOW, her school now has a water purification system. She doesn’t have to buy bottled water every day anymore — saving money while reducing plastic waste and learning the value of protecting the environment.

It’s good to know that this project, supported by funds from the oil sector, will soon reach more schools across the country. While the trickle-down from oil revenues can sometimes feel slow, seeing programs like this reach schools reminds us that our children, their health, and their education are starting to benefit.

To make sure these benefits last, I hope there are plans for continued attention to the maintenance of the water systems, so that students across all schools can rely on safe water every day.

Sincerely,

Shelly Singh
