ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge says the upcoming Longtail development will open a new chapter in Guyana’s energy journey, marking the country’s entry into large-scale gas development. He was speaking at the Berbice Development Summit, where he outlined how natural gas will underpin Guyana’s next stage of industrial growth.

Routledge said the project will be ExxonMobil’s first to target non-associated gas, setting the stage for future development in the Stabroek Block. “We are preparing to deliver to the government a field development plan in the first quarter of next year, with the aim of reaching a final investment decision by the end of 2026,” he said.

He noted that Longtail will anchor Guyana’s gas expansion efforts alongside the ongoing Gas-to-Energy project. “That project is founded upon bringing gas from the Liza field, from the two floating production facilities, 200 kilometres onshore to the Wales development area,” Routledge added.

The pipeline, designed for 120 million cubic feet of gas per day, will initially transport 50 million cubic feet to supply a 300-megawatt power plant under construction at Wales. Routledge said the project will deliver reliable, lower-emission energy and lay the groundwork for broader economic diversification.

“We are all focused on completing the power plant, getting that online, and delivering reliable lower-emission energy to support diversification of the industrial economy,” he said.

He explained that ExxonMobil’s long-term plan goes beyond power generation. The company is already assessing additional gas resources in what it calls the “southeast gas area.”

“We’ve heard the growing enthusiasm from the government to use the nation’s resources to stimulate the growth of a gas market in the Berbice region,” he said. “That is the integrated plan to which we are working to develop the gas resource, to bring it onshore, and to support this expansion of the country’s economy with gas.”

Routledge said the Longtail Project’s success will pave the way for a sustainable, gas-powered economy, providing the energy backbone for industries yet to emerge. “We’re excited that you can all join us here today to get on this fast-moving train which is Guyana’s development,” he said. “To work with us in partnership in the future development of Guyana supported by gas, fuelling a sustainable, prosperous future for Guyanese.”

The Longtail project is being designed to operate for three decades, making it the company’s longest-running production venture in the Stabroek Block. The project is expected to produce around one billion cubic feet of gas per day and 250,000 barrels of condensate
