Floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSOs) vessels built and operated by SBM Offshore are being deployed in line with international sustainability standards, including the SUSTAIN framework developed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

ABS first awarded the SUSTAIN-1 notation to the Liza Unity FPSO in 2021 and later to the ONE GUYANA FPSO. The Liza Unity also became the first FPSO in the world to receive the SUSTAIN-2 notation.

The SUSTAIN framework assesses how offshore assets integrate sustainability into design and operations, including environmental performance, emissions management, and alignment with broader development goals. It covers areas such as pollution and waste, coastal and marine ecosystems, energy efficiency and performance monitoring, low-carbon fuels, human-centred design, and asset recycling.

Certifications such as SUSTAIN-1 and SUSTAIN-2, awarded to floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels operating in the Stabroek Block, align with environmental, social, and governance standards.

According to ABS, the SUSTAIN-1 award to the Liza Unity FPSO was a key step toward aligning the offshore production system with elements of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The SUSTAIN-2 notation indicates a higher level of integration of sustainability practices into operations, including improved environmental monitoring and efficiency during production. The Liza Unity also achieved REMOTE-CON Notation, which demonstrates the vessel’s alignment with remote-control functions and signifies that the design and construction of the offshore asset are assessed against and adhere to the ABS Requirements for Autonomous and Remote Control Functions.

Guyana’s oil production is edging closer to one million barrels per day (b/d), with output averaging 918,000 b/d in February, supported in part by these two ABS SUSTAIN-certified FPSOs.

ExxonMobil Guyana operates the block with a 45% stake. Hess Corporation holds 30%, while CNOOC Limited holds 25%.
