The Guyana government said the MV Barima has been found on the seabed, with recovery operations now underway.
In an update issued on Monday afternoon, the government said the vessel’s location was positively identified following coordinated efforts by various stakeholders.
The potential location was identified by fisherman Haresh Singh at 1:31 p.m. on Monday. Singh had earlier assisted in rescue efforts following the incident.
The government said support from local fisherfolk, along with the privately owned vessel Gilligan Island, helped confirm the location of the vessel.
It also said a vessel owned by Sealand Surveys and operated by VEHSI, in collaboration with ExxonMobil, provided support during the search effort.
“Full recovery mode is being pursued,” Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar said in a Facebook post.
The French government has provided support in the form of 15 divers, who have joined local divers at the site to assist with recovery operations.
The government said recovered bodies will be taken to Charity for processing by health and police authorities. Relatives will be invited to identify the recovered bodies at Suddie Hospital.
