Dear Editor,

For many Guyanese families, access to life-saving heart care has long meant expensive travel, long waits, or going without treatment altogether. Today, that reality is beginning to change.

As oil revenues grow, we are seeing tangible investments in healthcare that are improving and, in some cases, saving lives across the country.

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading health concerns in Guyana, affecting families across every region. For years, access to advanced diagnostic tools and specialized care was limited, often requiring patients to travel to Georgetown or even overseas at great cost. Now, that gap is beginning to close.

With increased national revenue, Guyana is now undertaking one of the most ambitious healthcare expansions in the Caribbean. Hospitals across the country are being equipped with modern diagnostic technology such as CT scans, echocardiography, and other advanced imaging tools, allowing for earlier detection and better management of heart-related conditions. This shift is critical, as early diagnosis can mean the difference between life and death.

Equally important is the decentralization of care. For the first time, complex heart procedures and specialized screenings are becoming more accessible beyond Georgetown. Residents in regions that were once underserved are now able to receive care closer to home, reducing the physical and financial burden on families.

The benefits go beyond infrastructure. The petroleum dividend is also being invested in people. A new generation of Guyanese healthcare professionals is now being trained in specialized fields locally and through targeted programs, opportunities that were once only available abroad for those who could afford it. This ensures that the country is not only building facilities, but also the human capacity needed to sustain high-quality care.

While we often measure the success of oil in barrels and billions, its true value must also be measured in lives improved and lives saved. As Guyana continues to grow, we must remember that development is not just about economic expansion, but about building a society where people can thrive.

Sincerely,

Marjorie Benjamin
