Elroy Vankennie is the first Guyanese to hold the role of Quality Health Safety Security and Environment (QHSSE) Manager at Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI). “Being the first Guyanese in this position is an incredible honor and a proud moment,” he shared during a company highlight on social media on March 31.

Elroy believes his achievement reflects the capabilities of local professionals in Guyana. His career at GYSBI spans over six years. He started as a field officer and steadily moved into leadership roles, including QHSSE Coordinator, Night Supervisor, and Human Performance and Safe Choice Manager.

“Each role helped build my expertise and prepared me for this position.” He took on new responsibilities, worked on various projects, and continuously developed his skills.

GYSBI has been dedicated to the recruitment, development, and retention of Guyanese talent.

Transitioning into oil and gas came with challenges. “The learning curve was steep,” he reflected. It was a new industry, and Elroy was determined to find ways to bridge the knowledge gap. “I proactively sought out online courses, learned from international colleagues, and remained adaptable in the face of challenges.”

He credits his ability to learn quickly as a key factor in his growth.

GYSBI provided key opportunities for his development. “The company exposed me to high QHSSE standards and supported my professional growth.” He participated in both local and international forums, benefiting from training and hands-on experience. “These opportunities allowed me to expand my knowledge and apply best practices to my work.”

Elroy sees his success as part of a larger movement to empower local talent. “I want to inspire others to strive for excellence and contribute to Guyana’s growth.” He encourages young professionals to embrace learning, build strong work ethics, and seek mentorship. “Stay curious, work hard, and believe in yourself—even in uncertain situations,” the new QHSSE manager advised.

It supports a range of clients across its 140-acre development, with highly trained staff and services compliant with international standards and best practices.
