Gas projects offshore Guyana are being developed around two types of natural gas: associated gas produced during oil production and non-associated gas found in gas reservoirs. These types determine how the gas will be extracted and transported to shore under the Gas-to-Energy development and the proposed Longtail project.

In Guyana’s Stabroek Block, oil is produced at developments such as Liza 1, Liza 2, and Payara. Associated gas from these fields is largely reinjected to support oil recovery, while a small portion is currently used as fuel offshore. Under the Gas-to-Energy project, gas from Liza 1 and Hammerhead will be transported onshore for power generation in two upcoming phases.

The project is designed to take associated gas from offshore production, transport it through pipeline infrastructure, and deliver it to an onshore natural gas processing and power generation system at Wales..

Set for start-up 2026 year-end, the Gas-to-Energy project is expected to boost Guyana’s installed power capacity, reduce reliance on imported fuels, and improve electricity stability once fully operational.

Non-associated gas, by contrast, exists independently of oil. It is not produced as a byproduct of crude extraction but is instead the primary resource in dedicated underground gas fields. This type of gas is the focus of future offshore development plans, including ExxonMobil Guyana’s proposed Longtail project in the Stabroek Block.

Longtail, Guyana’s first non-associated gas development, is designed as a large-scale project targeting these standalone gas resources. Unlike the Gas-to-Energy project, which takes gas from an oil field, Longtail is designed for production from a natural gas field for potential use in liquefied natural gas (LNG) for export, as well as for domestic industrial applications.

The Haimara discovery is positioned as an anchor for another future offshore gas development in the Stabroek Block, with ExxonMobil indicating it could support a broader deepwater gas hub in the southeast gas area. It remains in the pre-development stage, alongside Longtail.
