Oilfield services and technology giant SLB has secured three contracts from Petrobras, Brazil’s state-run oil company, to provide completion hardware and services for up to 35 subsea wells in the development of the Buzios Wave II offshore oil field.

The contracts encompass SLB’s full-bore electric interval control valves and electric subsurface safety valves. The award catalyzes Petrobras’ full production system electrification, enhancing production availability through increased reliability in completions.

SLB said the transition to electric completions will empower Petrobras to efficiently manage a more advanced subsurface system. This, the company said, will facilitate maximum production control across multiple reservoir drains, potentially reducing the need for additional wells and minimizing heavy workovers throughout the productive lifespan of Buzios field wells.

Steve Gassen, President of Production Systems at SLB, pointed to the potential of this collaboration, stating, “By leveraging the electrification and digitalization of completions from SLB, Petrobras will increase its field recovery efficiency in complex and challenging pre-salt reservoirs. This contract award represents a critical milestone on Petrobras’ journey to digitally integrated offshore electric production systems. It will improve efficiency and deploy innovative technologies in Brazil.”

SLB said much of the technology slated for deployment in Buzios has been developed at its Taubaté Engineering Center in Brazil, specifically tailored for Brazilian pre-salt conditions. This development was achieved through collaboration with CENPES, the Petrobras research center, and TotalEnergies.
