Dredging in Demerara Channel to continue through 2025

The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) announced that dredging works will continue in the Demerara Main Ship Channel and off the West Coast of Demerara near Plantation Best.

The operation spans 34.74 square nautical miles, or 119.2 square kilometers. It is expected to conclude by December 31, 2025.

In addition to government-led efforts, several private companies are also engaged in dredging operations in the channel.

GAICO Construction routinely performs dredging for the Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYBSI) at Houston.

The Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base Inc. (VEHSI) carries out dredging for its own facility on the West Bank of Demerara.

Separately, major dredging was also done to support the construction of the new Demerara River crossing.
