The Government of Guyana, Mount Sinai Health System, and the Hess Corporation have announced a five-year extension of the National Healthcare Initiative. The initiative, launched in 2022, aims to transform Guyana’s public health system by 2030, ensuring world-class healthcare services are accessible to all citizens, particularly vulnerable communities.

The next phase will include the establishment of a national cancer center, continued modernization of national health facilities such as the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, and the implementation of an advanced digital health system. The initiative will remain jointly funded by Hess Corporation and the Government of Guyana, with leadership from the Arnhold Institute for Global Health and Mount Sinai International.

“Together, we are not just improving healthcare – we are redefining it,” President Irfaan Ali said at the signing ceremony on March 25. “The journey to world-class healthcare is not walked alone – it is built through strategic partnerships, bold investments, and a shared vision for excellence.”

John Hess, Chief Executive Officer of Hess Corporation, reaffirmed the company’s commitment. “We are proud to support the vision of the government and the work of Mount Sinai to provide world-class healthcare to every Guyanese citizen. Access to affordable and high-quality healthcare is central to the country’s future and its commitment to building shared prosperity for the people of Guyana.”

Dr. Brendan Carr, CEO of Mount Sinai Health System, underscored the initiative’s impact. “At Mount Sinai, we believe global health is local health, and with the Government of Guyana and the Hess Corporation, we’re building a public health system that ensures all citizens of Guyana – especially the most vulnerable – can live healthier, more productive lives.”

She said the public-private partnership is a global model, and the hospital is honored to be part of this transformational effort.

The extended initiative will focus on six key areas:

World-Class Cancer Care: Establishment of a national cancer center to expand access to screening, diagnostics, and treatment.

Women’s and Children’s Hospital: Ensuring the hospital meets international standards and provides high-quality care.

Community-Centered Care: Strengthening regional health systems to increase access to screenings and primary care.

Quality Improvement: Implementing a national programme to enhance healthcare quality and safety.

Digital Health: Rolling out Guyana’s first national electronic health records system.

Capacity Building: Expanding workforce development and resource planning.

Since its launch, the initiative has achieved key milestones, including over 35,000 child health screenings, nearly 900 nursing assistants set to graduate in 2025, new clinical guidelines for primary care, and a state-of-the-art pathology lab reducing diagnosis times.

This investment is a significant component of Hess Corporation’s environmental, social and governance strategy in Guyana. It has also committed to purchasing carbon credits from the country, valued at around US$750 million.

Hess and the Guyana government won the Energy Transition Initiative Award from the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN) for leadership in creating a sustainable energy future earlier this year.

Hess is a 30% stakeholder in the Stabroek Block where ExxonMobil is the operator with 45% interest and CNOOC, with 25%.
