SBM Offshore has secured a contract to study carbon capture solutions for Petrobras’ future floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) units. The study will evaluate the design and commercial feasibility of various carbon capture system configurations for FPSOs operating in Brazil’s oil and gas fields, the company announced.

The study builds on an engineering and design collaboration between SBM Offshore and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), qualified by DNV. The modular carbon capture solution integrates MHI’s proprietary CO2 capture technology with SBM Offshore’s Fast4Ward principles, forming part of the company’s broader emissionZERO program aimed at reducing emissions from offshore production.

Olivier Icyk, Chief Business Officer at SBM Offshore, stated: “The signature of this study demonstrates the trust that Petrobras has in SBM Offshore as an ocean infrastructure pioneer. We continue to work towards decarbonization solutions in the design of our products and in our offshore operations. Through this study, we will be able to advance the carbon capture module design jointly with our partner MHI for CO2 reduction on future FPSOs.”

The scope of the study includes designing and assessing multiple carbon capture models based on turbine types, gas flow rates, power setup, and CO2 concentrations. SBM Offshore is advancing its zero-emission FPSO concept and expects to have a market-ready solution by 2025.

The company anticipates about 40 FPSO opportunities within the next three years, with 16 falling within its target market. Recently, SBM Offshore acquired a stake in Ocean-Power, expanding its carbon capture expertise into low-carbon electricity generation.

The announcement follows key developments in SBM Offshore’s operations, including the construction of a disconnectable turret mooring (DTM) system and the start of oil production at a Petrobras-operated field in Brazil’s pre-salt Santos Basin.
