With the release of the draft local content policy expected this week, Guyanese would be able to peruse the document and share their views for the final policy during a consultation process that would be led by President, Dr. Irfaan Ali. That meeting is expected to be held next Monday, said Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo.

He disclosed as well that the draft policy was authored by the Energy Department, using the report of the Advisory Panel that was established last year by the Head of State. That panel which was led by President of the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA), Shyam Nokta, was asked to provide the government with advice and recommendations for a sound policy.

Jagdeo told members of the media yesterday that he has since asked the Ministry of Natural Resources to put the panel’s report on its website along with the draft policy.

“Once we get the comments from the consultation then we will probably hire someone to incorporate it into a final policy and then we will issue that for debate in Parliament. We will then move to legislation with that as the guide,” the Vice President expressed.

Jagdeo was keen to note that he had asked the Energy Department to include local content targets in the draft policy as he believes this is essential to the progressive development of a Guyanese-led oil sector.
