Trinidad and Tobago’s offshore geology shows similarities with deepwater reservoirs in Angola and Guyana, pointing to continued exploration potential in the region, ExxonMobil’s Vice President of Exploration John Ardill said on May 5.

According to Reuters, Ardill told the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston that Exxon expects to complete seismic acquisition offshore Trinidad and Tobago by year-end, with early interpretation pointing to similar deepwater systems.

“Angola has deepwater reservoirs, same as Guyana, and the concept we are looking for in Trinidad is similar deepwater oil reservoirs,” Ardill told reporters on the sidelines of the conference.

The comments come as Exxon expands exploration efforts across the region, building on its experience in Guyana, where deepwater discoveries have transformed the country into a major oil producer.

Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago were cited as examples where regulatory and commercial frameworks have supported exploration activity and investor engagement.

In January, ExxonMobil Business Development Manager Dr. Gboyega Ayeni said the company believes the rapid development model used in Guyana could also be applied in Trinidad and Tobago if deepwater exploration is successful.

Drawing on ExxonMobil’s Guyana experience, he described a model built on close collaboration among joint venture partners, international suppliers, and local contractors. He said that the approach allowed the company to execute multiple projects in parallel while continuing to learn and improve execution speed.

Trinidad and Tobago has been seeking to revive offshore exploration, including in ultra-deepwater areas, as part of efforts to attract new investment and boost oil and gas production.
