MODEC and Eld Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop a low-emission 1.2-megawatt power system integrated with carbon capture for future floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) applications, according to a June 4 release.

The system is designed to support offshore decarbonization efforts while maintaining a reliable energy supply for production operations.

“Under the MOU, the parties intend that Eld Energy will lead the design, procurement, and construction of the power system based on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), including requisite testing and validation, while MODEC will develop the carbon capture facility and system integration for FPSOs. The 1.2 MW unit is targeted for onshore testing in 2029, followed by long-term demonstration,” MODEC disclosed.

The project builds on collaboration between the two companies that began in 2025, which included earlier solid oxide fuel cell pilots scaled from 40 kW to 120 kW, combined with carbon capture testing.

The partners said the new phase aims to demonstrate scalability of solid oxide fuel cell technology and integrated carbon management for offshore energy systems.

“SOFCs convert chemical energy directly to electricity at high temperature and can accept multiple fuels, and when combined with carbon capture system they offer a practical pathway to deep decarbonization of FPSO power without compromising uptime. Going forward, MODEC will continue to contribute to a stable energy supply while advancing practical emissions reduction solutions on FPSOs,” MODEC said.

MODEC is executing engineering, procurement, construction, and installation contracts for FPSO vessels being developed for ExxonMobil Guyana’s Uaru and Hammerhead projects offshore Guyana.

Both projects are part of ongoing development activity in the Stabroek Block, where ExxonMobil and co-venturers Hess and CNOOC are advancing multiple offshore projects.
