Dear Editor,

I recently came across a point about local content that I believe more Guyanese need to understand. From what was explained, Guyanese businesses are not limited only to the 40 categories listed under the Local Content Act.

I will be honest, I did not know that before.

Like many persons, I was under the impression that those 40 areas were the main, or even the only, spaces where Guyanese companies could benefit directly from the oil and gas sector. So, learning that local businesses are already finding opportunities outside of those categories was both surprising and encouraging.

But it also made me ask myself: how many other ordinary Guyanese are still unclear about this?

We hear a lot about local content, but sometimes the discussion sounds very technical. It often stays among government officials, oil companies, contractors, and business groups. The average small business owner, tradesman, young professional, or service provider may not fully understand where they fit in.

That is a problem.

There may be Guyanese with skills, services, equipment, or business ideas who are assuming that oil and gas has no space for them simply because what they do is not named in the 40 categories. If people are thinking that way, then we may be leaving opportunities on the table.

Local content should not only be something discussed in boardrooms and conferences. It must be explained in plain language so that more Guyanese can see what is possible, what standards are required, and how they can prepare themselves.

The oil and gas sector is changing Guyana quickly. If we want Guyanese businesses and workers to benefit in a real way, then information has to reach people clearly and consistently. People cannot position themselves for opportunities they do not know exist.

I am pleased to learn that local content goes beyond the categories many of us are familiar with. Now the important thing is making sure more Guyanese know this too.

Yours faithfully,
A Concerned Citizen
