On Monday, Royston Souvenir, a worker attached to Gaico Construction and General Services Inc. was killed in an accident while on duty at the Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI).

Reports indicate that the accident occurred around 12:30 pm when Souvenir was struck by an excavator that he was standing behind, while it was in operation. Souvenir was struck to his chest and abdomen. He was reportedly taken to a city hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Managing Director of Gaico, Komal Singh, said a full investigation is being conducted to determine the circumstances that led to the accident. “We want it to be as transparent as possible because if it is not transparent, we cannot fix the problem,” Singh said. “Our sincere condolences go out to his family during this difficult time.”

GYSBI also extended condolences on Monday to Souvenir’s family. “Our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of the Gaico Construction employee who tragically lost his life today. Our prayers and support go out to his loved ones during this time,” the company said.
