A new drill campaign is set to get underway by Tullow Oil offshore Suriname at the Goliathberg Voltzberg North-1 (GVN-1) prospect at Block 47, targeting over 230 million barrels of oil.

According to Ratio Petroleum, a 20% stakeholder in the block, GVN-1 contains estimated resources of 235 million barrels of oil with a 34% geological chance of success.

The Stena Forth drillship has been contracted to spud the well which is located around 160 miles north of the Suriname coast.

“Stena Drilling is pleased to be the chosen contractor for this work and look forward to working with Tullow Oil plc and their partners again on this exciting opportunity,” Stena said in a recent statement.

The Goliathberg-Voltzberg North-1 well will test dual targets in the Cretaceous turbidite play in approximately 1,900 metres of water.

Block 47 covers an area of approximately 2,350 sq km at water depths ranging between 1,300 and 3,000 meters.

Tullow Oil is operator and holds 50% of the rights in Block 47 with Pluspetrol holding 30% and Ratio Suriname 20%.
